The Bluetits have returned to the box this year and are foraging for caterpillars to feed their growing chicks. The adults visit the fatballs frequently to keep up their energy levels and feed to the chicks. The sunny days increase the chances of finding enough food to sustain the young which normally fledge within 18-21 days after hatching.
The Bluetit chicks fledged around 21 May but we did not witness the event. However we noticed the adults were taking away food from the feeder every so often. Then a few days after fledging the adults brought 5 chicks to the fatball feeder. We didnt expect to see the chicks but they have been regular visitors to our garden over the past week.
